El viejo Santiago es un pescador que sale a navegar en su barco en busca de peces por el mar Caribe sin tener éxito. Es un hombre solo, acostumbrado a la dureza del mar, con su cuerpo lleno de arrugas y cicatrices, pero sus ojos son alegres con un brillo de resistencia y desafio y una vez más decide salir al mar, buscando su valía como pescador. Esta ocasión es diferente: un enorme pez cae en su trampa y el anciano no está dispuesto a dejarlo escapar. Logra capturarlo y matarlo, pero en la travesía de vuelta a tierra los tiburones devoran poco a poco al gran pez sin que Santiago pueda evitarlo. El viejo y el mar es una novela, en la que Ernest Hemingway trata temas como la soledad, la vejez, la sensación de la cercanía a la muerte, el cariño, la nostalgia y el no sentirse vencido, porque como él decía: El hombre no está hecho para la derrota. Un hombre puede ser destruido, pero no derrotado.
