En el curso de 1982, consagrado a La hermenéutica del sujeto, Michel Foucault presentó una investigación sobre la noción de "inquietud de sí", que mucho más que el famoso "conócete a ti mismo", organiza las prácticas de la filosofía. Pretendió allí mostrar según qué técnicas, qué procedimientos y qué fines históricos un sujeto ético se constituye en una relación determinada consigo mismo. Sus estudios van más allá de la estricta historia de la filosofía. Al describir el modo de subjetivación antigua, Michel Foucault busca subrayar la precariedad del modo de subjetivación moderna. Releyendo la filosofía antigua" que permite interrogar acerca de la identidad como sujeto moderno. Su trabajo consiste, en principio, en volverlos extraños así mismos, mostrando la historicidad de lo que podría parecer lo más antihistórico: la manera en que, como sujetos, todos se relacionan con todos. Lo que hace posible ese pasaje a la filosofía antigua es una reformulación del problema político: ¿y si las luchas de hoy ya no fueran tan sólo luchas contra las dominaciones políticas, ya no tan sólo luchas contra la explotación económica, sino luchas contra la sujeción identitaria Al releer a Platón y a Marco Aurelio, a Epicuro y a Séneca, Michel Foucault no busca ir más allá de la política sino repensarla.Lo que hace posible ese pasaje a la filosofía antigua es una reformulación del problema político: ¿y si las luchas de hoy ya no fueran tan sólo luchas contra las dominaciones políticas, ya no tan sólo luchas contra la explotación económica, sino luchas contra la sujeción identitaria Al releer a Platón y a Marco Aurelio, a Epicuro y a Séneca, Michel Foucault no busca ir más allá de la política sino repensarla.
