La intolerancia religiosa en Europa durante el siglo XVIII cobró muchas víctimas, entre ellas Jean Calas, un modesto comerciante francés que profesaba la religión protestante quien fue erróneamente acusado y juzgado por asesinar a su hijo en 1762. La sentencia fue morir en la rueda, un brutal instrumento que desmembraba a los condenados. Ante esta injusticia, Voltaire escribe en 1763 Tratado sobre la tolerancia, donde el autor reflexiona sobre las verdaderas razones de la sentencia de culpabilidad hacia Calas y de cómo la sociedad francesa estaba inmersa en un clima de intolerancia religiosa. Gracias a la grandilocuencia de este magistral ensayo, en 1765 se reconoce la inocencia de Jean Calas. Estamos ante una obra imprescindible en estos días donde los seres humanos seguimos segregando, acusando y luchando por la intolerancia religiosa.
