La figura de Arthur Conan Doyle ha quedado inscrita en el imaginario colectivo como el insigne creador del mítico Sherlock Holmes (y de su no menos mítico ayudante, el Dr. Watson). Sin embargo, la obra de Conan Doyle es pródiga asimismo en logros muy notables que trascienden de la narrativa protagonizada por el metódico detective afincado en Baker Street. Ejemplo de ello es la vertiente del género histórico que alberga su obra, donde Conan Doyle hace gala de su talento para transportar al lector a escenarios insólitos, singularmente atractivos, al tiempo que para manejar los hilos de la trama con envidiable pericia. Esas virtudes se ponen de manifiesto en las novelas y cuentos que tienen cabida en el presente volumen. El conocimiento de dichas obras por el lector de habla hispana se ve harto limitado por encontrarse en estos momentos fuera del circuito comercial de librerías, lo que contribuye, lamentablemente, al reduccionismo al que antes aludíamos de considerar a Conan Doyle como, a secas, ?el padre de Sherlock Holmes?.
