En El anticuario (1816), una de las obras maestras de Walter Scott -en nueva traducción de Arturo Peral, Francisco González y Laura Salas-, la imaginación romántica despliega espectacularmente todos sus personajes, paisajes y conflictos: desde imprevistas subidas de marea en una playa al borde de un acantilado hasta duelos en las ruinas de un monasterio, pasando por tesoros enterrados, cultos secretos y apariciones fantasmales. La galería de figuras es, por lo demás, impresionante: mendigos por vocación, condes lánguidos con un espantoso secreto en su pasado, capitanes pendencieros, baronets en la ruina, nigromantes alemanes y una muchacha enamorada que cree que es su «deber» no casarse por debajo de su condición. Es ésta una novela, sin embargo, en la que no es romántico todo lo que lo parece, y en la que el humor y la lucidez brillan con genialidad.
