Una novela perfectamente estructurada, mezclada de realidad y fantasía, a la manera de los cuentos moralistas. Narra la obsesión de un hombre atractivo y exitoso que quiere mantenerse siempre joven después de que un amigo, el pintor Basil Hallward, le retrata soberbiamente en un lienzo decidiendo vender su alma al diablo a cambio de seguir siendo joven. La obra parte del argumento universal de la eterna juventud; y el tema central de la novela es el narcisismo, ya que el personaje principal posee una excesiva admiración por sí mismo, hasta el extremo de no desear otra cosa que conservarse tal y como aparecía en el cuadro para siempre. Es una novela de estética decadente, animada por el personal modo y talante del escritor, alcanza el punto culminante de sus teorías vitalistas y neopaganas: el hedonismo como eje de la vida, el culto apasionado a la belleza y a la juventud como móviles del individuo.
