En el primer ensayo, "En lo que creo", E. M. Foster aborda su tema con una afirmación tanjante: "No creo en las creencias", pero a esta afirmación le sigue la formulación de un credo: a pesar de no creer en las creencias hay que creer en algo, en lo único que nos queda, es decir, las relaciones interpersonales. Esta expresión de fe parece frágil en un mundo de totalitarismos y xenofobias: el año en que Foster escribió este ensayo vio el inicio de la Segunda Guerra Mundial con guerras en China, en España y en Etiopía como trasfondo; el problema para todos los que aún conservaban ideales humanistas consistía precisamente en cómo combatir las tiranías sin adoptar las mismas estrategias de los tiranos, cómo salvar la dignidad sin caer en patriotismos ciegos y recalcitrantes. Foster formula su declaración de fe en palabras que sacudieron a toda una generación como la mía. "Si tuviera que elegir entre traicionar a mi país o traicionar a mi amigo, sólo espero tener las agallas para traicionar a mi país". Tal como él lo supuso, muchos se escandalizaron con tales aseveraciones, sobre todo aquellos que se encontraban en el poder, pero muchos también hallaron en esa confesión el aliento de esperanza para reconstruir una sociedad más justa y tolerante.
