La obra transcurre en Viena, donde el duque que gobierna la ciudad quiere retirarse durante un tiempo y nombra como su representante a Ángelo, pero en realidad se disfraza de fraile y se dispone a observar la actuación de éste. En estas circunstancias, un joven llamado Claudio es detenido por un delito de lujuria y es condenado a muerte conforme a una ley antigua de la ciudad, que Ángelo quiere imponer de manera inflexible. Isabel, hermana de Claudio, novicia de hermosa presencia, suplica a Ángelo que le perdone la vida. Éste, encendido de deseo, acepta conmutarle la pena a condición de que ella se le entregue. Ante esta proposición, Isabel, muy hostil al sexo, se niega, obligando al duque a intervenir.

Sobre la vida de William Shakespeare (Stratford on Avon, 1564-íd., 1616), probablemente el mayor genio dramático que ha existido, se sabe poco. Se ignora en qué año se trasladó a Londres, donde fue actor, autor y accionista de la compañía de los Lord Chamberlains Men (1594), que pasaría a ser la de los Kings Men (1603). Cuando hubo alcanzado fama y obtenido riqueza, Shakespeare adquirió en su ciudad natal la residencia llamada New Place (1597). A partir de 1613, retirado en Stratford, llevó una vida desahogada.
