Many readers can easily think of Black and Indigenous heroes and heroines from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but they draw a blank when it comes to the colonial period. It turns out that the colonial period contains a wealth of important cultural achievers: people who should be included in our lexicons, people who made major contributions to how the world evolved in that time. Colonial Black and Indigenous Cultural Leaders contains biographical stories of eighty such people, who made their marks in a variety of fields: music composers, architects, master-builders, sculptors, painters, potters, silversmiths, writers, poets, actors, business people, clergy, political leaders, and military heroes.
