Shaw schrieb 1914 mehrere Briefe und Artikel für die Presse und verglich England und Deutschland mit „ein paar extrem streitsüchtigen Hunden“. Im November veröffentlichte er einen Aufsatz mit dem Titel Gesunder Menschenverstand über den Krieg das deutete darauf hin, dass der englische Militarismus fast genauso für den Konflikt verantwortlich war wie die deutsche Variante. Dieses Stück brachte Shaw Verurteilung und Verachtung in der Pro-Kriegs-Presse ein, während viele begannen, seine Stücke zu boykottieren. Trotzdem schrieb Shaw weiterhin kritische Artikel über den Krieg und besuchte 1917 sogar die Westfront.
