Since the first gap junction protein (connexin) was cloned over a decade ago, more than a dozen connexin genes have been cloned. Consequently, a wealth of information on the molecular basis of gap junctional communication has been accumulated. This book pays tribute to this exciting era in the history of cell communication research by documenting the great strides made in this field as a result of the merging of biophysics and molecular biology, two of the most powerful approaches to studying the molecular basis of membrane channel behavior. Twenty-eight comprehensive chapters, authored by internationally recognized leaders in the field, discuss the biophysical, physiological, and molecular characteristics of cell-to-cell communication via gap junctions. Key aspects of molecular structure, formation, gating, conductance, and permeability of vertebrate and invertebrate gap junction channels are highlighted. In addition, a number of chapters focus on recent discoveries that implicate connexin mutations and alterations of gap junctional communication in the pathogenesis of several diseases, including the X-linked Charcot Marie Tooth demyelinating disease, some forms of inherited sensorineural deafness, malignant transformation, cardiac malformations and arrhythmia, eye lens cataract, and Chagas' disease.

  • POTASSIUM ION CHANNELS: MOLECULAR STRUCTURE, FUNCTION, AND DISEASES: MOLECULAR STRUCTURE, FUNCTION, AND DISEASES
    KLEINZELLER, ARNOST
This book is the first to focus on potassium ion channels and covers the recent remarkable progress made in research on these proteins. Many diseases are caused by the abnormalities of potassium ion channels. They include diabetes mellitus, life-threatening hereditary cardiac arrhythmia, epilepsy, neural degeneration, and renal hypertension. Written by leading scientists in the...

  • MEMBRANE PROTEIN-CYTOSKELETON INTERACTIONS
    KLEINZELLER, ARNOST
The plasma membrane acts as both a boundary and a site of exchange between the outside and the inside of a cell. The cytoskeleton plays essential roles in delineating membrane protein distributions, in defining structural and functional domains in the plasma membrane, and in regulating membrane protein, and ultimately, cell function. This volume reviews the regulation of membra...

  • CELL LIPIDS
    KLEINZELLER, ARNOST
Challenging and provocative overviews are presented in Volume 40 of Current Topics in Membranes. Topics on cell lipids vary from basic themes such as biosynthesis and membrane distribution to the role of lipids in intracellular signaling and membrane flow. This single volume also highlights the roles of lipids in eukaryotic cells and discusses organization of lipids in microdom...

  • CELL BIOLOGY AND MEMBRANE TRANSPORT PROCESSES
    KLEINZELLER, ARNOST
This volume brings together contributors from several different fields of cell biology, physiology, and molecular biology. The common thread that runs through all of the work presented is that cell processes regulate the activities of membrane transport proteins and classes of membrane transport proteins participate in a number of critical cell phenomena. This volume is unique ...
