When we read the Bible, we tend to race to our favorite passages. When we encounter a passage we don’t understand or like, or even one that is positively offensive, we tend to move on. We “eat the fish and leave the bones,” in a popular way of putting this approach to reading. But what if the bones are what we need? The psalms of Israel are full of glories that anyone can access: “The Lord is my shepherd.” “I lift up mine eyes to the hills.” But there are other, more infamous passages: “Happy are they who take your little ones and dash them against the rock.” Other passages insist that I, I alone, am righteous, and my enemies should be destroyed. These verses don’t find their way into needlepoint or cat posters at the dentist’s office. We usually ignore them in our teaching and devotional reading. But what if they’re in the Bible for a reason? What if they offer a kind of fiber in the diet that the body needs? What if they offer good, Jewish ballast so the ship of the church doesn’t tilt entirely over into saccharine spirituality and other-worldly Gnosticism? This book takes on the “rude psalms” that refuse to sit still and behave, and it sets them loose in the spiritual life of the church.

For four decades, the Rev. Dr. Jonathan R. Wilson has cultivated an imagination for "kingdom realism" as a pastor, teacher, theologian, and friend. What about outside the capital? Some, both inside and outside the church, say churches "cannot grow." But here they are--growing churches--in the north of England of all places. This is not only a story abo...

  • DISCERNING THE BODY
    JASON BYASSEE
Where in the world is the church? These articles, essays, opinion pieces, and blog posts gather around that question. If we quit on the question in despair, we are lost. If we answer it too quickly, we are not digging deeply enough. But if we hunt hard with the help of the Holy Spirit, we'll find Christ's body alive, active, working, growing, and making things new.In Discerning...

  • AN INTRODUCTION TO THE DESERT FATHERS
    JASON BYASSEE
The desert fathers wanted to get away from a church co-opted by empire and a Christian faith grown cold and listless. They retreated to the desert to do battle against demons and against their own worst desires. They had no intention of being famous; yet ironically their Sayings have inspired millions of imitators over the centuries. This guide is meant to accompany a reading o...

  • READING AUGUSTINE
    JASON BYASSEE
The Confessions of St. Augustine is one of the few Christian classics that is still widely read in the secular academy. Yet, oddly enough, it is not often read in the manner Augustine appears to have intended and in which the church read it for centuries: as a model of conversion, devotion, friendship, and the love of God. This book is a companion for any reader of the Confessi...

  • THE CONTINUING WITNESS OF THE MISSIONAL CHURCH
    JASON BYASSEE
For the last three decades, the growing field of missional theology has helped equip Christian communities to adapt to the challenge of Christian witness in a post-Christendom world. For many who lead these ministries, one scholar in particular has offered a powerful and compelling vision of what it means to walk worthily in an increasingly secular context--Darrell Guder. From ...
