As feedstocks to refineries change, there must be an accompanying change in refinery technology. This means a movement from conventional means of refining heavy feedstocks using (typically) coking technologies to more innovative processes that will coax the last drips of liquid fuels from the feedstock.

This book presents the evolution of refinery processes during the last century and as well as the means by which refinery processes will evolve during the next three-to-five decades. Chapters contain material relevant to (1) comparisons of current feedstocks with heavy oil and bio-feedstocks; (2) evolution of refineries since the 1950s, (3) properties and refinability of heavy oil and bio-feedstocks, (4) thermal processes vs. hydroprocesses, and (5) evolution of products to match the environmental market.

Process innovations that have influenced refinery processing over the past three decades are presented, as well as the relevant patents that have the potential for incorporation into future refineries.

• Comparison of current feedstocks with heavy oil and bio-feedstocks.
• Evolution of refineries over the past three decades.
• Properties and refinability of heavy oil and bio-feedstocks.
• Thermal processes vs. Hydroprocesses.
• Evolution of products to match the environmental market.

* Investigates the engineering and plant design challenges presented by heavy oil and bio-feedstocks

* Explores the legislatory and regulatory climate, including increasingly stringent environmental requirements

* Examines the trade-offs of thermal processes vs. hydroprocesses

    SPEIGHT, JAMES G.
The extraction of natural gas from shale formations is no simple task and perhaps themost expensive when compared to over unconventional gases. Although, its popularityhas grown over the years, there is much to be done to make their production andprocessing more cost-effective. Brief but comprehensive, Shale Gas Production Processesbegins with an overview of the chemistry, engi...

  • OIL AND GAS CORROSION PREVENTION: FROM SURFACE FACILITIES TO REFINERIES
    SPEIGHT, JAMES G.
According to NACE (National Association of Corrosion Engineers), the total annual cost of corrosion in petroleum refining takes up $3.7 billion in the US alone. Corrosion control is always a challenge for the downstream industry, but as the quality of feedstock is declining due to refineries accepting more of the heavy and shale gas and oil resources that are more readily avail...

  • HIGH ACID CRUDES
    SPEIGHT, JAMES G.
High Acid Crudes quickly gets the refinery manager and all other relative personnel up to date on this particular type of feedstock by providing an overview and relevant details of the identification of high acid crudes and their influence on the refinery’s process units, especially regarding corrosion potential. Covering the types, effects on the various refining units, and pr...

  • FOULING IN REFINERIES
    SPEIGHT, JAMES G.
Fouling in Refineries is an important and ongoing problem that directly affects energy efficiency resulting in increased costs, production losses, and even unit shutdown, requiring costly expenditures to clean up equipment and return capacity to positive levels. This text addresses this common challenge for the hydrocarbon processing community within each unit of the refinery....
