Alexander, a retired professor, and his beautiful young wife, Yelena, have returned to his country estate. Their presence is a complete disruption to everyone including Sonya, the daughter of the professor and his first wife, and Uncle Vanya, the first wife's brother, who have managed the farm for many years. The presence of the captivating Yelena introduces tension into the household. Dr. Astrov, a frequent visitor, and Vanya both fall in love with her. Unfortunately, Sonya has long been secretly in love with Astrov, who fails even to notice her. Yelena attempts to help Sonya's cause but is unsuccessful as she struggles to deny her own attraction to Astrov. When Vanya realizes that Alexander has a fraudulent reputation and that he is planning to sell the estate, Vanya, furious and desperate, attempts to shoot him. Alexander and Yelena decide to leave the estate, and Vanya asserts that now, "everything will be just as it was." Of course, nothing will ever be the same.

Excerpt: "Sergey Kapitonlch Akhineyev, the teacher of calligraphy, gave his daughter Natalya in marriage to the teacher of history and geography, Ivan Petrovich Loshadinikh. • THE DUEL AND OTHER STORIES
    ANTON PAVLOVICH CHEKHOV
Chekhov illustrates the complexities of the dynamics in 19th century Russian society in an impossibly effortless way. He does it so well precisely because he refuses to acknowledge just one absolute truth about life: humans are complex, and so the world they create must be one too. (Goodreads) ...

  • THE COOK'S WEDDING AND OTHER STORIES
    ANTON PAVLOVICH CHEKHOV
This collection of Checkhov stories centers on children in animals. Many of the stories are told from the perspective of children (The Cook's Wedding), or from the limited perspective of a pet. This is perhaps the cutest collection, with a trained animal act and kittens. (Goodreads) ...

  • IVANOFF: A PLAY
    ANTON PAVLOVICH CHEKHOV
Ivanov is a four-act drama by the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. A government official concerned with peasant affairs, Chekhov paints him as the quintessentially melancholy Russian from the upper social strata. Severely afflicted by internal conflicts; his loss of appetite for life, love of his wife, and external pressures; managing his estate and his debts, collide in a mel...

  • THE BLACK MONK, AND OTHER STORIES
    ANTON PAVLOVICH CHEKHOV
Chekov seems to me the prime example of the writer who writes without tricks... and his stories always come alive and are most original & varied, and impossible to imitate... tho he has influenced many. The Black Monk presents a problem written about by many... but Chekhov does it without using a single word of the condescending diagnostic vocabulary... so that the character, &...
